Ant Control Brisbane: Ant Nest and Trail Treatment for Homes, Units and Businesses

Need effective ant control Brisbane households and businesses can rely on? Fair & Fresh Pest Solutions identifies the ant species first, then uses slow-acting baits, nest treatment and external perimeter work to deal with the whole colony, not just the ants you can see.

Local Ant Specialists

Ant Treatment Built Around Brisbane's Wet, Warm Seasons

Ants are active in Brisbane for most of the year, and they are at their busiest once spring warms up and the summer rain arrives. Heavy rain can flood nests in garden beds and under pavers, which pushes colonies into wall cavities, roof voids and kitchens. In suburbs like Bulimba and Kenmore, coastal brown ants build soil mounds along paths and paving, while black house ants and white-footed house ants send trails into homes from trees and the roofline.

Good ant control comes down to the colony. Spraying a trail often just scatters the ants, so we use baits that foragers carry back to the nest, then treat the nests and entry points we can find. Where an ant is a biosecurity concern, such as the fire ant, we point you to the right authority instead (see the note in the species guide below).

If you are also seeing cockroaches in the kitchen, ask about cockroach treatment, or have us quote spider control in the same visit. Our local pest control team at Fair & Fresh can price them together.

Trail Tracing and Nest Inspections

Technicians follow ant trails back to their source, checking paving, garden edges, wall voids and roof spaces so treatment reaches the nest and not only the foragers.

Why It Matters

Health and Property Problems Caused by Ants

Most ants are a nuisance, but a few species contaminate food, bite or sting, or quietly set up home in places you would rather they did not. Large colonies are also much harder to remove than small ones.

Food Contamination

Ants that scavenge through bins, drains and kitchens before reaching your food can carry bacteria such as Salmonella. Even a thin trail across the bench is a reason to look at open food and sticky spills.

Bites and Stings

Green-head ants can deliver a painful sting, and fire ants, a biosecurity concern in South East Queensland, can cause severe allergic reactions in rare cases. If you are stung by a suspected fire ant, seek medical attention.

Damage Around the Home

Ants nest in wall voids, power points and electrical equipment, and some species protect honeydew-producing insects such as aphids and scale on garden plants. Carpenter ants can also damage timber.

Early Detection

Signs You Need Ant Control in Brisbane

A few stray ants are normal, but a steady trail means a colony has found a reliable source of food in your home. Look out for:

  • Steady trails: ants marching in a line along benches, skirting boards, window sills or pipes.
  • Soil mounds along paths: small piles of loose soil beside paving, driveways and garden edges, typical of coastal brown ants.
  • Ants swarming sweet or greasy food: spills, pet bowls, honey, jam or fat around the stove.
  • Ants in bathrooms and pot plants: ghost ants and others settle in damp vanities and potted plants.
  • Winged ants after rain: flying ants, or swarming termites, emerging indoors or gathering around windows and lights.
  • Trails vanishing into walls: ants disappearing into power points, cornices, window frames or cracks in the wall.
  • Sticky honeydew on plants: ants tending aphids, mealybugs or scale, leaving leaves coated in a sticky film.
  • Fine wood shavings: small piles of sawdust-like debris at the base of timber, which can point to carpenter ants.
Identification Guide

Ant Species Found Around Brisbane Homes

Different ants feed on different foods, so the right bait depends on the species. A bait that one species ignores can be a favourite of another, which is why identification comes before treatment.

Common Brisbane ant species, where they nest, how to identify them and how they are treated
Species Where It Nests Identification and Habits Typical Treatment
Coastal brown ant Soil along paths and paving, garden beds and around foundations Small, about 1.5 to 2.5 mm, yellow to brown. Leaves soil mounds along footpaths and goes for meat, sweets and greasy food. Nest treatment in soil, baiting and a perimeter barrier
Black house ant Tree trunks, roof voids, wall cavities and under eaves About 2.5 to 3 mm, shiny black. Scavenges in kitchens and bins and is drawn to sweet food. Locate the colony, bait the trail and treat entry points
White-footed house ant Tree trunks, loose bark, roof spaces, wall voids and outdoor furniture About 3 mm, dark with pale yellow-white feet. Does not bite or sting, but colonies grow huge and spread into satellite nests. Baiting plus treatment of satellite nests, often over several weeks
Ghost ant Wall voids, pot plants, under objects and damp kitchen or bathroom cabinets Tiny, about 1.6 mm, with pale translucent legs and abdomen. Seeks sweets and grease and may use many nest sites. Sweet gel baiting and checks of pot plants and damp areas
Green-head ant Under paths and pavers and in rockeries About 5 to 6 mm, black with a metallic green head. Rarely comes indoors but can deliver a painful sting. Targeted outdoor nest treatment
Carpenter ant Damp or decaying timber, tree hollows and wall voids Nocturnal, with workers in several sizes. Builds satellite nests, so one nest is rarely the whole colony. Inspection for damp timber and all nest sites, then targeted treatment

Sizes and colours are approximate. If you are unsure what you have, we can identify the ants when we visit.

Think you have fire ants? Fire ants are copper brown with a darker abdomen, vary from about 2 to 6 mm and swarm aggressively when disturbed. Keep away from the nest and report it rather than treating it yourself. You can report suspected sightings, with a photo if possible, to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program online or on 13 25 23. Ipswich City Council explains that under the Biosecurity Act 2014 residents and businesses have a general biosecurity obligation to manage fire ants they know about or should know about.

Treatment Options

Baiting, Nest Treatment and Commercial Programs

Slow-Acting Baits Along the Trail

Foraging ants carry the bait back to the nest and share it, so the colony is reached and not only the ants on the bench. Sweet-feeding and protein-feeding species need different baits.

Nest and Perimeter Treatment

Nests in soil, paving, wall voids and roof spaces are treated directly, and a residual barrier around the outside of the building helps stop new trails reaching the house.

Strata and Commercial Programs

Scheduled ant control with dated service records for Brisbane body corporates, cafes, offices and food premises. Sites that want a full pest program can add rodent control to the same schedule.

Our Method

Our 4-Step Ant Treatment Process

Identify and Trace

We identify the species, follow the trails and inspect likely nesting areas such as paving, garden beds, wall voids, the roof and nearby trees.

Bait the Foragers

Baits go along active trails and out of reach of pets and children, chosen to suit the species and what it is currently feeding on.

Treat Nests and Entry Points

Nests we can reach are treated directly, voids are dusted where needed and the gaps ants are using to get inside are pointed out.

Barrier and Review

A perimeter barrier is applied around the building where it suits the species, and we explain what to watch for over the following weeks.

Safety, and what to expect after baiting. Baits are placed by a licensed technician, who will show you where they are and which areas to keep pets and children away from. If someone may have swallowed bait or a treatment product, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 straight away.

Expect more ants at the bait for the first few days, because that is how it reaches the nest. Please do not wipe away the trail or spray surface insecticide over it, as this can scatter the colony into new areas.

Preparation and Prevention

Getting Ready for Ant Treatment and Stopping Them Returning

Ants follow food and moisture, so a few changes at home help the treatment work faster and stop the colony rebuilding.

Before Your Appointment

  • Leave the ant trails alone so the technician can see which way they run.
  • Put away honey, sugar, jam, pet food and other sweet or greasy foods.
  • Skip supermarket surface sprays before the visit, as they can drive ants into new areas.
  • Make a note of where you see ants, such as windows, the pantry or pot plants, and tell the technician.
  • Clear access to the edges of garden beds, pavers and the area under the sink.

After Treatment, Keep Them Out

  • Leave the bait in place until ants stop feeding on it.
  • Wipe up sticky spills and crumbs straight away, and rinse jars and recycling before binning them.
  • Keep pet bowls clean and lift them between meals.
  • Trim branches and vines touching the roof or walls, and keep mulch away from the foundations.
  • Seal gaps around windows, pipes and cornices, and fix leaking taps and irrigation.
  • Deal with aphids, scale and mealybugs in the garden, because ants protect them for their honeydew.

What Affects the Cost of Ant Control?

A single trail coming in from the garden is a quick job, while a white-footed house ant colony spread through the roof and wall voids takes more time and materials. We quote after seeing where the ants are coming from, so the price reflects the work involved.

Use our quote page or ring us to get a written price before treatment begins.

  • The species involved and the size of the colony.
  • Whether nests are indoors, outdoors or both.
  • The size of the property and how many areas need treatment.
  • Access to the roof void, wall cavities and the ground under paving.
  • Seasonal or recurring treatments for a strata or commercial site.
  • Follow-up visits if the colony is large.
Got Questions?

Ant Control FAQs

How much does ant control cost in Brisbane?

Pricing depends on the species, how many nests there are and whether the treatment is indoors, outdoors or both. A simple trail along a kitchen bench costs less than a colony spread through wall voids and paving. Our quote page is the quickest way to get an upfront estimate.

Is ant treatment safe for pets and children?

Baits are placed along ant trails in spots that pets and children are unlikely to reach, and your technician will explain which areas to avoid and for how long. Tell us about pets, fish tanks and reptiles when you book. If you think someone has swallowed bait, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

How long does it take to get rid of ants?

Ants often seem to increase for a few days while they carry bait to the nest, and many people see a clear drop within a week or two. Large colonies, especially white-footed house ants with satellite nests, can take longer. The inspection shows how big the colony is, and we will give you an honest estimate of how long it should take.

Why are there more ants at the bait, and can I spray them?

More ants at the bait early on is a good sign, because the foragers are feeding and taking it back to the colony. Please do not spray surface insecticide or wipe away the trail, since that can break the colony into smaller nests. Let us know if activity is still strong after a couple of weeks.

Are flying ants the same as termites?

They can look alike, but flying ants have a narrow waist, bent antennae and front wings longer than the back pair. Termites have a thick waist, straight antennae and wings of equal length. Termites need a dedicated timber pest inspection by a licensed specialist, so if you are unsure, take a clear photo or keep a few insects in a sealed jar and show your technician.

I think I have fire ants. What should I do?

Keep away from the nest, because fire ants swarm when disturbed, and report them to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program online or on 13 25 23. A photo or video of the ants and the nest helps with identification. Fire ant treatment is coordinated through the program.

Do you provide ant control for strata and commercial properties?

Yes. We offer scheduled ant control and dated service records for body corporates, cafes, offices and food premises. Contact us to discuss your site, or browse our full list of pest control services.
