Spider Treatment for Brisbane's Gardens, Queenslanders and Sheds

Brisbane's mild, humid climate and leafy gardens suit spiders very well. Redbacks settle into sheds, letterboxes, stairs and the underside of outdoor furniture, while white-tails and huntsmans wander indoors. In suburbs like Mitchelton and Mount Gravatt, established gardens and timber sheds give spiders plenty of cover, and porch lights draw in the moths and flies they hunt.

Not every spider needs treating. Many are harmless predators that eat other pests, and a huntsman on the wall is usually more startled than dangerous. We focus on what matters: redbacks near entries and play areas, spiders in bedrooms and doorways, and heavy web build-up around the house.

Spiders follow their food, so a spider problem often travels with insects such as ants and cockroaches. Ask us to quote ant control or cockroach treatment in the same visit, and see our home page for everything else we treat.

Eaves, Sheds and Garden Inspections

Technicians check eaves, window frames, garages, sheds, letterboxes and garden beds, noting which spiders are present and where they are sheltering.

Why It Matters

Spider Bites and the Risks of Ignoring a Spider Problem

Most Brisbane spiders are harmless to people, but a few can cause serious bites and others are simply painful. Knowing which is which matters, especially with children and pets around.

Redbacks and Funnel-Webs

Female redbacks are common in backyards, and their bite may need antivenom. Funnel-web spiders, including the northern tree funnel-web found in south-east Queensland, are among the most venomous in the country.

Bites Inside the Home

White-tails and huntsmans hide in shoes, bedding and clothes left on the floor. Their bites usually cause only mild pain, itching or swelling, but they can still be distressing for young children, older adults and people with heart conditions.

Webs, Egg Sacs and Mess

Black house spiders cover window frames, eaves and gutters in messy webs, and each egg sac can hold many young. Heavy webbing collects dust and debris and makes a home look neglected.

Early Detection

Signs You Need Spider Control in Brisbane

A single spider is no cause for alarm, but repeated sightings or webs that keep coming back suggest your property suits them. Look for:

  • Webs that keep returning: around eaves, window and door frames, gutters and under the pergola, even after you clear them.
  • Messy, lacy webs in corners: untidy webs around window frames and eaves are typical of black house spiders.
  • Tangled webs in sheltered spots: strong, untidy webs low in sheds, letterboxes and under seats often belong to redbacks.
  • Egg sacs: round or papery silk sacs hanging in webs or tucked into corners and under outdoor furniture.
  • Spiders indoors at night: wandering huntsmans and white-tails near beds, bathrooms and cool tiled floors.
  • Silk-lined burrows: holes or trapdoor-style entrances in garden beds, mulch, rockeries or lawns.
  • Insects clustering around lights: moths and flies draw spiders to outdoor lights, porches and carports.
  • Spiders in shoes and stored items: footwear, gardening gloves and boxes in garages or sheds are favourite hiding places.
Identification Guide

Spiders Found Around Brisbane Homes and Gardens

Some spiders are dangerous, some are only a nuisance and most are harmless. This guide shows the ones our technicians see most often and what we do about each.

Common Brisbane spiders, where they live, how to identify them and how they are treated
Spider Where It Lives Identification Typical Treatment
Redback spider Sheds, letterboxes, stairs, sub-floors and under outdoor furniture The female is glossy black, usually with a red or orange marking, and about 10 mm long. The male is far smaller. Builds a tangled web in a sheltered spot. Web and egg sac removal, then residual treatment of sheltered spots
White-tailed spider Bathrooms, cool tiled floors, bedding, shoes, mulch and leaf litter Grey to black, roughly 12 to 20 mm, with a white tip on the abdomen. Does not build a web. Perimeter treatment, plus clearing mulch and clutter
Huntsman spider Under bark, flat rocks, eaves and roof spaces, and sometimes inside homes and cars Large, flat and hairy, brown to grey, and quick to move sideways. Does not build a web. Removal from the house, plus entry-point advice if numbers are high
Black house spider Window frames, eaves, gutters, sheds and tree bark Dark brown to black and velvety, up to about 15 mm, with messy, lacy funnel webs. Web removal and residual treatment of frames and eaves
Funnel-web spider Burrows and crevices in moist, shaded ground, mulched beds and rockeries Glossy, dark and aggressive when cornered. Males wander in warm, humid weather. The northern tree funnel-web lives in south-east Queensland. Keep clear of burrows and have the area assessed by a technician
Mouse spider Burrows in garden soil, often with a right-angled trapdoor and often near water Black with a bulbous head and jaws, 10 to 30 mm long. Females are larger and may have red-tinged jaws. Bites are uncommon but potentially dangerous. Keep clear of burrows and have the area assessed by a technician
Golden orb-weaver Garden trees and shrubs, and between posts, fences and eaves Large, with a golden web that can stretch a metre or more across. Low risk and seldom bites. Web removal where webs cross paths and entrances

Sizes and colours are approximate. If you cannot tell what you have, take a photo and we will identify it for you.

If someone is bitten. In an emergency, call 000. The Better Health Channel advises that for a suspected funnel-web or mouse spider bite you should apply a firm pressure bandage, immobilise the limb and keep the person still. For a redback or other spider bite, wash the area and apply a cold pack for about 15 minutes, then get medical advice. Never cut the bite or use a tourniquet. If you can do it safely, take a photo of the spider. The Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 can also give advice.

Treatment Options

Web Removal, Residual Treatment and Commercial Programs

Pest control technician removing spider webs and egg sacs from a window frame on a Brisbane home

Web and Egg Sac Removal

Webs and egg sacs are cleared from eaves, window frames, doorways and sheds. That cuts the population straight away and makes new activity easier to spot.

Residual Treatment

A residual treatment goes onto the places spiders shelter, such as eaves, window and door frames, sheds, garages and external walls, so it keeps working on spiders that return.

Strata and Commercial Programs

Scheduled spider control for Brisbane body corporates, warehouses, cafes and offices. Cutting down flying insects with fly control also reduces what spiders have to eat.

Our Method

Our 4-Step Spider Treatment Process

Inspect and Identify

We check eaves, frames, sheds, garages and garden beds, identify the spiders present and note where they are sheltering.

Clear Webs and Egg Sacs

Webs and egg sacs are removed so the population drops straight away and any new webs stand out.

Apply Residual Treatment

A residual treatment goes on the sheltering spots and entry areas, concentrating on the places people and pets use most.

Prevent and Review

We point out the lighting, clutter and garden habits that draw spiders in, and explain what to expect over the coming weeks.

Safety, and what to expect. Treatments are applied by a licensed technician, who will explain which areas to keep children and pets away from until they are dry. Tell us about fish tanks, reptiles and other pets when you book. In case of accidental swallowing of a treatment product, phone the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 for advice.

Spiders hide deep in crevices, so you may still see the occasional one in the weeks after treatment, and new spiders can move in from the garden. Repeat visits are sometimes worthwhile for heavy infestations, especially in the warmer months.

Preparation and Prevention

Preparing for Spider Treatment and Making Your Home Less Inviting

Spiders go where the insects, shelter and clutter are. A few changes inside and out help the treatment last longer.

Before Your Appointment

  • Clear access to eaves, sheds, garages and the area under the house.
  • Move outdoor furniture, pot plants and firewood away from the walls.
  • Wear gloves when moving boxes, stored items or garden waste, and shake out shoes and gloves before use.
  • Tell the technician where you have seen redbacks, burrows or egg sacs.
  • Keep children and pets away from sheltering spots while the technician works.

After Treatment, Keep Spiders Away

  • Use warm-white or yellow outdoor lights, or switch them off when not needed, since bright white lights draw insects.
  • Brush down new webs and egg sacs regularly, wearing gloves.
  • Keep mulch, leaf litter and wood piles away from the foundations.
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, pipes and vents, and fit door seals.
  • Store garage and shed items in sealed plastic tubs and keep floors clear.
  • Trim the garden back from walls, sheds and the roofline.

What Affects the Cost of Spider Control?

A few webs under the eaves of a unit is a small job, while a large property with several sheds, a pergola and heavy redback activity takes longer. We quote once we have seen where the spiders are, so the price matches the property.

Tell us about your property through our quote page and you will get a written price before we begin.

  • The size of the property and how many buildings it has, such as a house, shed or garage.
  • The spiders involved and how heavy the webbing is.
  • The height of the eaves and whether the home has one storey or two.
  • Outdoor areas such as pergolas, fences and garden beds.
  • Whether you also want the inside of the home treated.
  • Follow-up or seasonal visits.

Spider Control FAQs

How much does spider control cost in Brisbane?

Pricing depends on the size of the property, how many buildings and outdoor areas need treating and how heavy the spider activity is. Tell us about your property on our quote page for an upfront estimate.

Are redback spiders dangerous?

Only the female redback's bite is considered dangerous, and it may need antivenom. Most bites happen when a hand goes into a web, so check sheds, letterboxes and the underside of outdoor furniture before reaching in. In an emergency call 000, and see the first aid note above.

Are white-tailed spider bites really dangerous?

Most bites cause mild irritation, itching and a small swelling that usually settles within a few weeks. Medical studies have not been able to confirm the old belief that white-tails cause skin ulcers. See a doctor if a bite gets worse or you feel unwell.

Is spider treatment safe for pets and children?

Treatments go onto eaves, frames, sheds and other sheltered spots, and your technician will tell you which areas to keep pets and children away from until they are dry. Let us know about fish tanks and reptiles when you book. For accidental swallowing, the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 can advise.

How long before I see fewer spiders?

Clearing webs and egg sacs makes an immediate difference, and many people notice fewer spiders within a couple of weeks as the treated areas keep working. Spiders can move in from the garden, so repeat visits are sometimes needed. We will give you a realistic timeframe once we have seen the property.

Do I need to get rid of every spider?

Not necessarily. Many spiders, including huntsmans, are harmless to people and eat other pests. We concentrate on dangerous species, spiders near entries, beds and play areas, and heavy web build-up. Tell us what is bothering you and we will recommend what is worthwhile.

Do you provide spider control for commercial properties?

Yes. We offer scheduled spider control for body corporates, warehouses, cafes and offices. Contact us to talk through your site, or head to our home page for the other pests we treat.
